The downpour has turned whole neighbourhoods into muddy streams, pushing debris and shattered concrete along the narrow paths between overcrowded tents. Some shelter centres now sit under more than 10 centimetres of water, ruining mattresses and soaking every blanket families depend on. Everything is lost. Parents scrape trenches into the mud, begging the water to move away long enough to keep their children warm, but the flooding rises faster than any effort they can make. With brooms, buckets, plastic bowls, even their bare hands, they fight to keep the water from swallowing the only space they have.

Across the camps, families spent the early hours in a desperate struggle against the rain. Many did not sleep for a moment as water crept across the ground, soaking their clothes, bedding and whatever belongings they had managed to save. There is no dryness. No warmth. No protection from the wind that cuts straight through the thin fabric of their tents. Thousands are surviving freezing, water logged nights with nothing to shield them.
