Who Should Give Qurbani in the USA? Understand Your Duty with Ease

Qurbani Wednesday, 13 May 2026

The holy month of Dhul Hijjah comes fast. Muslim families across the United States get ready for Eid ul Adha. We look forward to community prayers and family feasts. But a big question pops up every single year. Many believers ask, ‘Exactly who should give qurbani? You might feel unsure about the strict Islamic rules. You might wonder if your US bank account requires you to buy an animal. Do husbands and wives need separate sheep?

We understand your worry. Islamic rules can seem hard to grasp. You want to honor Allah correctly. You want to avoid any mistakes. This guide makes the rules very simple. We use plain words. We write in short sentences. We explain exactly how to count your money. We cover the rules for everyone living in your house. Keep reading to find out your true duty this Eid.

The Real Meaning of the Eid Sacrifice

We must first learn why we do this. We do not just kill an animal for a big dinner. We perform this act to show our deep love for Allah. We remember the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Allah tested his faith. Allah told him to sacrifice his dear son, Ismail (AS). Ibrahim (AS) obeyed right away. Allah loved his pure heart. Allah saved Ismail (AS). He gave Ibrahim (AS) a ram to sacrifice instead.

You follow this beautiful path today. You show Allah that faith beats money. You also feed starving families. Many poor people only eat fresh meat during Eid. Your sacrifice fills their empty plates. You bring huge smiles to hungry children. You unite our global Muslim family. You turn your money into a blessing.

The Five Basic Rules: Who Should Give Qurbani?

Islamic scholars give us very clear rules. These rules point out your exact duty. So, who should give Qurbani this year? You must offer a sacrifice if you meet five basic conditions. You must meet these conditions during the three days of Eid.

1. You Must Follow Islam

This act of worship is only for Muslims. Only believers hold this special duty. People of other faiths skip this act entirely. You must believe in Islam to earn the heavenly reward. It is a core part of our faith.

2. You Must Reach Adulthood

Islam treats children with great care. It gives them no heavy money duties. You only face this rule after you hit puberty. Children skip this duty. A child might own a large college fund. They still do not buy an animal. Parents do not spend the child’s money on this.

3. You Must Have a Healthy Mind

You must understand your daily choices. You must freely choose to worship Allah. Severe mental illness removes this duty. Islam excuses people who cannot make clear choices. Allah only tests those who can understand the test.

4. You Must Not Travel Far

Islam makes travel very easy. If you travel far away, you skip the sacrifice. Scholars say travelers go past 48 miles. You also count as a traveler if you stay in a new city for under 15 days. If you travel during Eid, Islam drops this heavy rule for you.

5. You Must Reach the Wealth Limit (Nisab)

You only buy an animal if you hold extra money. We call this limit the Nisab. If your spare money hits this exact mark, you must act. We explain this simple math in the next section.

How Do You Count Your Nisab in America?

The Nisab acts as your wealth baseline. It tells you if you must pay Zakat. It also tells you if you must buy an Eid animal. You do not need to hold this money for a whole year. You only need it during the three days of Eid.

Choose the Silver Limit

We check the Nisab against current gold or silver prices.

  • Gold Limit: The market price of 87.48 grams of gold.
  • Silver Limit: The market price of 612.36 grams of silver.

Scholars urge us to use the silver limit. Silver costs much less than gold. The silver limit includes more people. More people buy animals. We feed many more starving families this way. Check the daily silver price in US Dollars (USD). This number becomes your exact target.

Count Your Spare US Dollars

You must add up your spare wealth. You need to include:

  • Cash in your checking account.
  • Cash in your savings accounts.
  • The current value of your gold jewelry.
  • Money in stocks or mutual funds.
  • Empty houses you rent out.
  • Business stock you plan to sell.

Do not count your main family home. Do not count your daily car or your furniture. Add your spare wealth first. Then, subtract your immediate debts. Immediate debts are bills due this exact month. Subtract your current rent. Subtract your immediate credit card bill. If your final total beats the silver price, you must act.

Do You Face a Strict Law or a Choice?

American Muslims often ask this big question. Your specific school of thought provides the answer.

  • The Hanafi School: These scholars call the sacrifice Wajib. This means a strict law. You commit a sin if you hold the money and skip the act.
  • Other Schools: Shafi’i, Maliki, and Hanbali scholars call it a strong Sunnah. You do not sin if you skip it. But you lose a massive reward. They strongly urge you to do it.

Both paths point to the same good action. If Allah gives you wealth, you must share it. Feed the poor and honor our shared history. Do not let the money sit in the bank while others starve.

Rules for Different Family Members

American homes handle money in many ways. This causes confusion every year. Let us look at normal family setups. We make the answers very clear for everyone in your house.

Husbands and Wives

Many couples both work in the US. A wife might own wedding gold. A husband might hold his own savings. Everyone counts their wealth alone. Does the husband hit the limit? He buys one animal. Does the wife hit the limit? She buys her own animal. One small sheep fails to cover them both. They need two small animals. Or, they can buy two shares in a large cow.

Teenagers and Children

Kids never buy an animal. Parents do not spend their own money on kids’ duties. The law strictly targets adults. However, a parent can buy an extra animal for a child. This is a choice, not a rule. Allah loves extra good deeds. It teaches children to give.

Loved Ones Who Passed Away

We deeply miss our past loved ones. You can buy an animal for them. This beautiful act sends rewards directly to their souls. It brings them peace in the next life. But stop and check your own duty first. You must buy your required animal first. Then, you buy the extra animal for the dead.

How to Pick the Right Halal Animal?

How to Pick the Right Halal Animal?

You cannot choose just any farm animal. Islam sets strict rules for the sacrifice. The animal must reach a set age.

  • Sheep and Goats: These need to live for one full year. One goat covers one adult person.
  • Cows and Bulls: These need to live for two full years. Seven adults can share one cow.
  • Camels: These need to live for five full years. Seven adults can share one camel.

The animal must look completely healthy. You avoid blind animals. You avoid sick animals. You avoid limping animals. The animal needs most of its ears, horns, and tail intact. You offer Allah your absolute best. You never offer damaged goods to the Creator.

How Do You Divide the Fresh Meat?

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) showed us exactly how to share. You cut the fresh meat into three equal piles.

  1. Pile One: Keep this for your own house. Eat it with your family. Enjoy the blessing.
  2. Pile Two: Give this to your friends and neighbors. Give it to them even if they earn good money. It builds love.
  3. Pile Three: Hand this directly to the poor. Find starving people and feed them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our campaigns, donations, and how you can help.

Can I just hand cash to a poor person instead?

No. Shedding the animal's blood is the required act. You cannot skip the animal. You can give cash to Watan USA instead. We will sacrifice the physical animal for you.

I have a massive student loan. Do I skip the duty?

Look only at your immediate debts. Subtract this month's loan payment from your savings. Ignore the huge 10-year total. If your remaining savings beat the Nisab limit, you buy an animal.

I have a 30-year house mortgage. How do I count this?

Treat it like the student loan. Only subtract this month's mortgage bill. Do not subtract the entire house debt. Most homeowners still need to buy an animal.

Can Muslim women perform the slaughter?

Yes. A woman can hold the knife. She must learn the exact Islamic cutting method. She must say Allah's name. Islam encourages this action for both men and women.

I missed my duty last year. How do I fix it?

You cannot slaughter two animals this year to make up for it. Find the exact price of a small sheep today. Give that cash directly to the poor. This charity payment clears your past mistake.

Does my business bank account matter?

Yes. Count your business cash. Count the value of your store inventory. Add this to your personal savings. This grand total decides your eligibility.

Do I count the money in my 401k or retirement fund?

Scholars differ on this. Most say you only count it if you have full access to withdraw it without heavy penalties. If it is locked away, you do not count it. Ask your local Imam for specific advice on your exact fund plan.

What is the exact slaughter time?

Wait for the Imam to finish the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. You have until sunset on the 12th. An early slaughter just gives you normal dinner meat. It does not count as a holy sacrifice.

Can I send my money to another country?

Yes. You can send your money to a poor country. Charities like Watan USA do this for you. It helps people who need it the most. It fulfills your duty perfectly.
